Carlos Schwabe, The Death of the Grave Digger (La mort du fossoyeur)

Musée du Louvre, Paris

Date: 1895-1900
Technique: Watercolour, 75 x 55,5 cm

The angel of death, whose long green wings are shaped like scythes, has just alighted like a great bird on the edge of a grave being dug by an old man in a snowy cemetery. The artist has used the entire Symbolist repertory of signs and plants.
