Paul Gustave Doré, Cover for "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe

Date: 1882

In 1882, Doré took on his only U.S. commission ever for Poe's The Raven. Doré's interpretations of The Raven were based upon what he conceived as "the enigma of death and the hallucination of an inconsolable soul." Doré died in early 1883, just as he was finishing the Raven engravings. He had just turned 51.
