Charles Allan Gilbert, All is Vanity
Date: 1892
Technique: Drawing
Charles Allan Gilbert is especially remembered for a widely published drawing (a memento mori) titled All Is Vanity. The drawing employs a double image (or visual pun) in which the scene of a woman admiring herself in a mirror, when viewed from a distance, appears to be a human skull.
Drawn in 1892, the illustration was not seen by the mass public until 1902 when it appeared in a magazine. It has been published many times and to this day prints of it are still sold.
